Friend designed this addition to an existing mid-century modern home to provide needed space for a growing family.  Introducing a new shed form with a minimally sloped transition connector to the existing home, the new addition treads lightly on its context while playfully contrasting its host with its materiality.  The additional square footage includes two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a secondary living area for entertainment that doubles as a yoga studio and playroom for the kids. The L-shaped addition creates an intimate courtyard that carefully curates Brutalist details with its introduction of concrete planters, benches, and sharp shadows articulated by the corbeled brick façade.
